Abbaye d'Art TRIZAY

Curious by nature

The Abbaye de Trizay is one of the hidden gems of Charente-Maritime. Founded in the late 11th century and once home to Benedictine monks, it now captivates visitors with its distinctive architecture and unique octagonal church. It is also an arts centre where heritage and contemporary creativity come together.

An architectural enigma

Founded at the end of the 11th century, the Abbey of Trizay was dependent on the powerful Abbey of La Chaise-Dieu in Auvergne. Listed as a historical monument, it was restored in the 1990s.
The site preserves some remarkable features, such as its octagonal church, the chapter house with its poly-lobed arches, and the former dormitories decorated with murals.

The contemporary art center

From march to november, the Abbaye de Trizay hosts 3 temporary exhibitions. Artists are invited to display their works in the 12th century rooms, creating a dialogue between contemporary creation and Romanesque architecture and transforming the abbey into a
place of discovery, between past and present.
